Reaching and Teaching Gen Z

The goal of this course is to learn about Generation Z and explore the factors that influence their daily lives. Considering that this is the first generation to only know a life with an internet-connected smartphone, technology has indelibly impacted who they are and how they see the world. By taking on the lens of the student, teachers explore the consequences and opportunities of this, as well as teaching strategies geared toward this generation of students. Course participants deepen their understanding of Generation Z, and also enhance their empathy for them as well.

The main concepts covered in this course include the intersection of mental health and the smartphone on Generation Z, as well as current trends in politics and education. Participants read The Plainer Truths of Teaching, Learning and Literacy by Dr. Morton Botel and Mrs. Lara Paparo, as well as iGen by Dr. Jean Twenge. Throughout the course, participants are introduced to educational strategies and lessons patterned on The Five Reading, Writing, and Talking Processes and The Four Lenses of Learning that can help to engage and connect with this generation of learners.
